Cooking Class

The tour...

- Šta je za obid? – that is THE question, the mother of all questions, meaning “what's for lunch”? No question in a Dalmatian house is more important than this one.

The answer can make or break the atmosphere in a home for the day. And every day is important! So, it’s not at all unusual to conduct this little survey among your closest friends or some random people that you’ve just met at the green market, the butcher’s or the fish market…
Luckily for you, the question has already been answered, so it’ll be smooth sailing from here!

... goes like this

We are two local lasses, both eager to share our passion for the local lifestyle, each from our own unique angle. Being a history buff myself, I enjoy endless requests for new perspectives of ancient events. Your other host is one of the greatest chefs in the region, always looking for the best local ingredients while creating a new dish.
So, what’s your day going to look like with the two of us?
Some cooking will sooner or later be required, but before you take a wooden spoon in your hand and start stirring the pot, we have some field research to do. We’ll start within the walls of the ancient Roman palace built in 4th century AD and then, in order to blend in, do as the locals do: take a light walk from the fish market to the green market to check the daily offer. After all, you must pop down to the market to check what others are having for lunch today and hear the latest news (not gossip!) in town.
Since your chef has already done the most important thing – coming up with the lunch menu – it is your time to shine! After a nice walk through the city center, it is time to get your hands dirty. We’ll meet our chef in her urban kitchen studio and learn how to process, cook, conserve and also serve and consume your meal… We are joining forces to bring the Dalmatian dream closer to you and help you truly indulge this Dalmatian lifestyle we are so proud of.

This tour, which answers THE question and many other questions about our cuisine and lifestyle, is available all year round, any day of the week except Christmas and St. Stephen’s Day – I am at my mother’s, eating the best pašticada on the world; New Year’s Day – I am at my mother in law’s, eating the best roast you can imagine. Those two charming ladies are also grandmas and you do not mess with grandmas in Dalmatia, especially when it comes to family gatherings. It’s the law. There is nothing I can do about it. Our chef is in no better position, the same law applies to her. So, except for bank holidays, the Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace are open for visits Monday to Sunday from 9AM – 16PM, so we can offer this tour all year. During the summer and high season, the opening hours are more flexible, even on bank holidays, so it should not be a problem to arrange it all year round. As for the green market and the fish market, working hours are from 7AM – 12:30 PM, and that’s why we like to start this tour in the morning. Feel free to write, even on bank holidays, at dalmatian.lifestyle@gmail.com. I maybe won’t be able to reply right away, but I’ll find a moment to send you all the information that you might need whilst arranging this tour. I look forward to hearing from you!
