The Jewish Story

The tour...

You know how sometimes chit-chat and passing remarks can have a big impact? That’s exactly what brought this tour to light!

A guest on a foodie tour asked a question about Jewish history in Split and it made me realize I’ve never really dug into it. So I made a promise to myself to learn all about it and search for clues in the city center…

... goes like this

It made me realize how firmly the Jewish history is embedded in the history of Split. It really is one of the city’s most intriguing stories. The Synagogue and the Jewish cemetery are the obvious traces of the Jewish community, but there are so many small clues in the Split city center that offer a broader view and send us on a real journey through history.
Together we will search for those clues, connecting little dots in time and space, unraveling a thread that explains several key moments in Split’s past and reveals the names of some impressive people that played crucial roles in it’s history. It’s really amazing how big an impact such a tiny community had. From Roman times up until today, we’ll reveal both the history of Split, and the Jewish heritage, which is an integral part of it.

But, let us not forget it’s all happening in Split and the proper way to really experience any given day with the locals is to gather around the table and share some food. And when talking about food, I can guarantee two things – it won’t be kosher and it will be local.

As a typical representative of talkative Dalmatian women, I will be more than happy to take you on this intriguing tour any day of the week, all year round. However, if we want to visit the Cellars of Diocletian’s palace and the Synagogue (and we do), we should plan this tour for days Monday through Friday. Synagogue is open for visits Monday to Friday from 10AM – 1PM. During summer time and high season the opening times are more flexible. The Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace are open for visits Monday to Sunday from 9AM – 4PM. During summer time and high season working hours are more flexible. The Cellars and the Synagogue are open all year round, but outside of the summer season they are closed on bank holidays, so we have to pick the dates around those days. The Jewish cemetery is located on the eastern slope of the Marjan hill, overlooking the city. For us it means a nice walk up the hill through the charming alleys of the Veli Varoš neighbourhood. For our knees it means a little more exertion after a couple of hours of walking. Personally I love those charming little streets and I think it’s a pity to skip them, but we can take a taxi up the hill and explore them on our way back down to the city centre. In order to arrange all this in a timely manner, it’s best to contact me directly at dalmatian.lifestyle@gmail.com so we can discuss all options and find a suitable solution for your visit to Split. I look forward to hearing from you!
